A practical question from the kitchen
The ambition was clear: make better use of what was already in stock. Ingredients were passing their usable dates before they were used. The owner wanted to see what was available, what needed buying and what should be used first.
Those three questions shaped the starting point. The solution needed to fit the restaurant’s daily work and require little extra effort.
A small tool with solid foundations
Meal Minion provided a useful starting point: Python for the logic, Flask for a simple user interface and SQLite to store inventory. That foundation was reimagined for the kitchen: keep track of stock, see purchasing needs and identify ingredients that need attention.
The aim was a clear, tailored tool. Ordinary inventory operations do not need AI; straightforward rules and an accessible interface keep them reliable and understandable.
Intelligence when it is useful
An AI agent adds value when the kitchen needs inspiration. Using ingredients that need to be used up or are overstocked, it dynamically suggests possible recipes.
The suggestions support the team’s decisions. The kitchen remains in charge of what is appropriate to prepare and serve. AI helps explore possibilities while leaving the workflow flexible.
Refine together until it works in practice
The workflow and interface were refined through several collaborative iterations. The same question guided each round: does this fit the situation, and is it workable in the restaurant? Anything that made a simple inventory task unnecessarily complicated did not belong in the solution.
The right scope, with room for judgement
The aim was not a full ERP project for a focused inventory question. It was a simple, user-friendly tool to help the restaurant keep an overview, with intelligence on demand where it adds value. Collaboration and refinement matter just as much as the technology.
